Another Review for The Hollow

Katie posted her review of this already, but I just finished the book last evening. I thought I would post my thoughts on it as well.

The Hollow
By: Jessica Verday
Publisher: Simon & Schuster, 2009
5 out of 5 stars

What would you do if your entire world fell apart? Everything you know is gone? Worst of all – you don’t even know why.

This is exactly what Abbey must deal with before she begins her Junior year of high school. Abbey’s best friend, Kristen, has vanished near the Sleepy Hollow bridge and nobody knows if she will return. Most people believe that she’s dead and gone, but Abbey can’t just accept that she will never see her friend again. However, Abbey has to learn to accept that fact when Kristen’s body is fished out of the Crane River.

Abbey withdraws further into herself rather than dealing with her feelings about Kristen’s death. It’s not until she meets a handsome stranger in the Sleepy Hollow cemetery that Abbey begins to feel emotions again. Caspian captures Abbey’s attention immediately and she can’t stop herself from wanting to know more about him. Her visits to the cemetery become more frequent as she hopes to stumble upon him.

However, life is rarely exactly as it seems. Abbey soon learns that everything she thought she knew may not be the truth. She begins to doubt Kristen, Caspian, and herself.

I found The Hollow to be a truly mesmerizing story about love and betrayal. Jessica Verday does an amazing job of capturing teen angst and putting it into a unique setting and plot. I love the fact that the book is deeply steeped in the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. I have to admit that was the original reason I picked this book up. I have always loved this particular legend and was super excited to see an author had decided to revive the story in their own way. Reading this novel makes me want to know more about this small town. I might even have to talk my husband into planning a visit!

I was frustrated when the book ended and there were so many things that were still unresolved in my mind. However, I am sure these loose ends will be tied up with the release of books #2 and #3 in the near future. Book #2 is set to be released in Fall 2010 and Book #3 will hit the shelves Fall 2011. I’m not sure how I’m going to wait that long! I need more Caspian!

Jace & Raphael City of Glass Outtake

Cassie posted this outtake on her google group earlier today.  I love that she still spends a lot of her time interacting with her fans and taking time to answer questions.  She is truly amazing!!
*This is a dream sequence: Jace dreams about Raphael, in a scene that
was cut from the final version of Glass.*
*
*Jace couldn’t sleep. He lay awake on his side, looking across the small,
moonlight-washed space to where Alec lay asleep in the bed opposite his.
They had been given the smallest rooms at the top of the house — Isabelle
and Max had the room next to theirs, much to their mutual annoyance — and
since the roof was steeply gabled, the walls slanted at such an angle that
it was hard to stand up unless you were in the middle of the room, and
sitting up suddenly in bed usually resulted in a bumped head.
Alec was a humped shadow in a welter of white sheets, his head pillowed on
his arm. His closed eyes has a bluish cast to them. Asleep, he looked hardly
older than he had when Jace had first arrived at the Institute in New York.
Jace considered going across the room and waking Alec up, just to have
someone to talk to, but he supposed that wasn’t a very kind or generous
impulse. Still, almost anything was better than being alone with his
thoughts —
Wayland. The word was hardly more than a whisper, so soft Jace thought at
first that he had finally fallen asleep and dreamed it. Wayland, come to the
window.
Jace rose to his feet, still wondering if he were dreaming, and went to the
window. It was shut, and he glimpsed his own reflection in it, his face very
pale above his black t-shirt, before he threw up the sash and pushed the
window open.

Never Cry Wolf by Heather Davis

While blog surffing this morning, I came across a handful of blog entries about a new author Heather Davis and her new book Never Cry Wolf. Here's what Heather says about the book:
NEVER CRY WEREWOLF
September 1, 2009
HarperTeen

"Moonlight can totally change your life.
And it all starts so simply.
You. Him. The moon. You’re toast."

Okay, so maybe Shelby has made a few mistakes with boys lately (how was she supposed to know Wes had “borrowed” that Porsche?). But her step-mother totally overreacts when she catches Shelby in a post-curfew kiss with a hot senior. Suddenly Shelby’s summer plans are on the shelf, and she’s being packed off to brat camp. It’s good-bye, prom dress; hello, hiking boots.

Things start looking up, though, when Shelby meets fellow camper (and son of a rock star) Austin Bridges, III. But soon she realizes there’s more to Austin than crush material—his family has a dark secret, and he wants Shelby’s help guarding it. Shelby knows that she really shouldn’t be getting tangled up with another bad boy…but who is she to turn her back on a guy in need, especially such a good looking one? One thing’s for sure, that pesky full moon is about to get her into trouble all over again.
