Book Review-Fallen

Released December 17, 2009

5 star book

I know we have have an amazing review about Fallen, that Carla graciously posted here- http://tinyurl.com/yev7lgv but having just finished Fallen today, I had to come on and gush about this brilliantly written book! Lauren Kate did an amazing job with Fallen!

It's Alluring, dark, and twisty. This is a must read book for any fan of fallen angels or any fan of the ultimate love story. This book had me glued to the pages until the very end. Lauren Kate did a fabulous at keeping me hooked.

Luce is torn between an undeniable pull she feels for Daniel, whom one minute talks to her and then the next minute avoids her. Drawn to him in ways she can't explain, Luce is determined to figure out why he's acting that way towards her. She can't help but feel that she knows him from some where before. To make it worse, she keeps having dreams about an angel, who's face she doesn't see, but everything else about him seems very familiar to her.

Then there's Cam. The good looking bad boy, with secrets of his own, is alluring to Luce and she finds comfort in his friendship, though he wants something more. There's more to both Cam and Daniel that Luce thought, and even more about her own life that she never thought possible, as she finds she's in the middle of an age old fight of true love and good vs evil. Fallen Angels do exist and they are all around her.

Lauren Kate kept the Fallen full of twists and turns that had me clinging to the pages of the book until I finished it and had to put it down. I can not wait for the sequel, which will be in September of this year.

Waiting On Wednesday-Brightly Woven by Alexandra Bracken

hosted Jill at Breaking the Spine
Published by EgmontUSA
To Be Released March, 23rd 2010

Sydelle Mirabil is living proof that, with a single drop of rain, a life can be changed forever. Tucked away in the farthest reaches of the kingdom, her dusty village has suffered under the weight of a strangely persistent drought. That is, of course, until a wizard wanders into town and brings the rain with him.

In return for this gift, Wayland North is offered any reward he desires—and no one is more surprised than Sydelle when, without any explanation, he chooses her. Taken from her home, Sydelle hardly needs encouragement to find reasons to dislike North. He drinks too much and bathes too little, and if that isn’t enough to drive her to madness, North rarely even uses the magic he takes such pride in possessing. Yet, it’s not long before she realizes there’s something strange about the wizard, who is as fiercely protective of her as he is secretive about a curse that turns his limbs a sinister shade of black and leaves him breathless with agony. Unfortunately, there is never a chance for her to seek answers.

Along with the strangely powerful quakes and storms that trace their path across the kingdom, other wizards begin to take an inexplicable interest in her as well, resulting in a series of deadly duels. Against a backdrop of war and uncertainty, Sydelle is faced with the growing awareness that these events aren’t as random as she had believed—that no curse, not even that of Wayland North, is quite as terrible as the one she herself may carry.

This cover is stunning! We are eagerly awaiting the release of Brightly Woven and looking forward to getting to know Sydelle and reading her story. Please mark your calendars for our chat with Alexandra on March 18th!!

Book Review-Magic Under Glass

Released December 22, 2009

4 stars

Nimira is a music-hall girl used to dancing for pennies. So when wealthy sorcerer Hollin Parry hires her to sing accompaniment to a mysterious piano-playing automaton, Nimira believes it will be the start of a better life. In Parry's world, long-buried secrets are about to stir. Unsettling rumors begin to swirl about ghosts, a madwoman roaming the halls, and Parry’s involvement in a group of corrupt sorcerers for whom the rules of the living and dead are meant to be broken for greater power. When Nimira discovers the spirit of a dashing fairy gentleman is trapped within the automaton, she is determined to break the curse. But even as the two fall into a love that seems hopeless, breaking the curse becomes a perilous race against time. Because it's not just the future of these star-crossed lovers that's at stake, but the fate of the entire magical world.
(taken from Jaclyn's site and cover is the UK cover)

This was a wonderful read and I adore the UK cover. The US cover is being re-jacketed and we'll post the picture of the new jacket when it's released. The cover does not take away from this wonderful story. I adore historical fiction reads and what I enjoyed most about Jaclyn's book is how she wove a wonderful world she created full of faeries and magic, into a wonderful historical time piece. I was whisked away in a different century while reading this. Magic Under Glass has a bit everything, from faeries, to magic, to romance, to history and a strong female character.

Nimira or Nim as she tells Erris, the Fairy Prince whom she's trying to free that has been locked inside the automation she has been hired to sing with. Where the other girls that Hollin hired to sing with the automation ran, upon fear it was haunted, Nim fights back her fears and learns the truth about Erris. As Nim is falling in love with Erris, she would do anything to save him, even if that means running away with Hollin, who's given her anything she needs and provided her with a life style she used to live. Her heart isn't set on Hollin, or his estate or the life style, she wants Erris and will do anything to ensure he's freed before the dark Sorcerer Smollings destroys Erris/the automation. Hollin Parry's full of dark secrets and Nim must help him bring those secrets to light if she wants to save Erris.

This is a great read, as it's full of wonderful characters, a great story line, some great twists that kept me turning pages and I really love the story of Erris and Nim. There's so much more to their story I'm looking forward to reading in the sequel along with getting to know more about some of the characters I fell in love with. I think this was a wonderful debut book and I really enjoyed the world that Jaclyn has created.
